Kelvin Hughes, recently bought by Hensoldt is showing its latest tactical software features for the company’s naval navigation and situational awareness displays on an interactive multiscreen navigation display at DSEi 2017, highlighting the advantages of advanced tracker software over conventional ARPA trackers and also showing how SharpEye radar sensor technology can be used to inform the command of threats in some other unique and innovative ways. From the security and border surveillance solutions from Kelvin Hughes the latest in drone detection and tracking is demonstrated on the company’s stand as well.

As militaries worldwide struggle with soldiers suffering from heat stress – due to increased training pressures and heavier kit – Equivital looks to combat these injuries and fatalities by designing wearable technology that can save soldier’s lives. Equivital’s BLACK GHOST system provides valuable information to commanders and medics on a soldier’s temperature, heart rate, breathing rate, position and activity. The BLACK GHOST application also now includes a novel Heat Strain Index (HSI). HSI is a tool in estimating current heat strain and predicting an impending heat related injury. Alerts and thresholds can be tailored to each user and the data allows commanders to intervene in a timely manner when a threshold is breached. Not only does the Equivital system provide a current estimation of heat strain, it also has the functionality to predict 15 minutes in the future the heat risk related to an individual if they were to continue in the same environment at the same activity level.

Saab, on stand N2-230, touts its Barracuda Vehicle Integrated Camouflage Systems, such as the Mobile Camouflage System (MCS), which is also showcased on vehicles from multiple different OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) companies. MCS, developed and produced by Saab’s business unit Barracuda, is intended for protection of vehicles during movement and in combat, no matter what environment and climate. The system is a flexible solution which can be applied in a number of configurations using different types of materials. MCS is also mounted on an IVECO vehicle equipped with a CBRN and air defence capability.

BAE Systems is teamed with Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman to deliver the F-35 LIGHTNING II multi-role fighter, bringing military aircraft and systems expertise to the programme that is critical to the development, manufacture and support in the areas of: systems engineering, electronic warfare, structural and flight test, advanced manufacturing, supply chain management, performance based support solutions, training and maintenance, and interoperability and operational support. BAE Systems flight simulation facilities have been used to support the design and development of the interface between the F-35 LIGHTNING II and the QEC aircraft carriers. Elements of both designs have been assessed and improved through simulation, including: visual landing aids, including lights and flight deck markings, shipborne rolling vertical landing, helmet mounted display symbology for embarked operations, QEC CONOPS for fixed wing operations, and Landing Signal Officer (LSO) situational awareness aids and LSO/pilot CONOPS.

Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group have been awarded a new contract by MBDA for the manufacture of the Common Anti-Air Modular Missile (CAMM) Canisters for the next-generation Sea CEPTOR and Land CEPTOR weapon systems. Through this contract, Marshall will deliver Canisters as a semi-installed unit to MBDA. In addition to the £13.5 million contract award, further options exist for future CAMM requirements plus the potential for a CAMM Extended Range Canister currently in development. Marshall also supports the Land Ceptor programme through its design, manufacture and integration of sub-systems equipment for the Land CEPTOR Fire Unit Support Vehicle (FUSV).

A new modular approach to developing bespoke steering systems specifically aimed at the heavy off-highway vehicle market was announced at DSEI by Timoney.  Designed to be utilised on 4x4, 6x6 and 8x8 vehicles, Timoney plans to offer solutions that can be integrated with any independent wheel movement axle system. Using its experience of designing vehicle independent wheel movement axles, running gear and developing rapid solutions, Timoney has developed a custom design methodology utilising common architecture which can control whatever configuration the customer requires – whether it is front axle, front bogey, rear axle or all wheel steer.  Timoney’s experience of independent suspension systems gives them the ideal background to maximise vehicle performance and optimise the typical geometry constraints of modern programmes.

Atech, a company of Embraer, is one of the highlights on the Brazilian Pavilion at DSEI 2017, where it showcases its Arkhe family of products and services: Arkhe Command & Control (C4ISR systems), Arkhe Mission & Combat (built-in systems), Arkhe Intelligence (intelligence systems), Arkhe Cyber (cybersecurity) and Arkhe Academy (qualification, simulation and training). Arkhe Command & Control consists of solutions for planning, surveillance and monitoring, which provide a full view of the operational theater for decision-makers. It is possible to integrate existing systems and sensors as well as other technological solutions to this tool. With projects in Brazil and abroad, Atech has installed C4ISR centres that aim at strengthening internal security and also the borders of the countries to which Atech renders services. The Arkhe Mission & Combat solution is designed for maritime and air tactical missions, fully integrating sensors and systems of aircrafts and vessels. Arkhe Mission & Combat can be found at the Brazilian Navy H-XBR Programmr. Atech is responsible for developing the Naval Tactical Mission System (TDMS) that equips Brazilian Navy H225M helicopters.

A new ‘Tactical Table’ for warships and naval support vessels is in focus on the Hatteland Display stand (S5-360) during DSEI. Hatteland Display developed the touch-screen Series X 55” Ultra High Definition Tactical Table to act as a central focus on the bridge of naval vessels for navigational and operational decision making based on multi-data display from diverse sources and sensors on board. As one of the largest displays available in the market for maritime and naval applications, Hatteland Display’s new Tactical Table provides the size needed to integrate multi-data on a single screen while ensuring that it is easy to read and manipulate, using 40-point touch screen control. A highly flexible solution, it can deliver data from a wide variety of sensors and sources on board, making it a highly customisable option capable of supporting operations on a wide variety of littoral platforms. Crucially the high-end, 4K resolution panel ensures that multiple data types can be easily viewed under all conditions. Other highlights on Hatteland Display’s DSEI stand come from its established line of MIL Qualified rugged display solutions that are tested and fully approved for naval users, including 20" and 32” 4K resolution models designed for easy installation and reliable operation in integrated bridge systems and other critical control systems on board. The compact, MIL Qualified HM C02 naval computer will also be on display at DSEI. As successor to the highly successful HM C01 computer, which can be found on hundreds of naval vessels worldwide, it incorporates the latest processor technologies and enhanced feature sets, making it suitable for integration in modern control solutions for a wide range of contemporary naval applications.
