Speaking to MONCh during the DSA 2018 defence exhibition being held in Kuala Lumpur 16-19 April, officials from NPO Angstrem disclosed that the company is confident that its new R-187VE vehicular/fixed base radio will be chosen to satisfy an emerging Russian Army requirement for new transceivers to outfit its armoured vehicles fleet.
The company is already supplying its R-187-P1E Azart handheld tactical radio to the Russian Army as a transceiver to be used at the squad/platoon leader level. The R-187VE will have full compatibility with the R-187-P1E Azart, company officials continued. The R-187VE is a multiband radio providing High Frequency (HF) communications across a 1.5 megahertz/MHz to 30MHz waveband, Very High Frequency (VHF) communications across a waveband of 30MHz to 180MHz and three Ultra High Frequency (UHF) waveband options of 220MHz to 470MHz, 550MHz to 1.25 gigahertz/GHz and 1.65GHz to 2.5GHz. All of these wavebands will offer one kilohertz channel spacing. Meanwhile, the power output levels of the radio are between ten watts/W up to 100W, according to the waveband.
Similarly data rates differ, with 9.6 kilobits-per-second (kbps) achievable across HF, 255kbps achievable using VHF with between two megabits-per-second (mbps) and 32mbps achievable using UHF. The company’s official literature states that the radio can achieve a range of 500 kilometres/km (310.7 miles) in HF, and between five kilometres (3.1 miles) up to 20km (12.4 miles) using V/UHF. Regarding communications security, the R-187VE performs 100 hops-per-second, although rates of up to 20,000 hops-per-second are achievable with V/UHF, company officials continued, with such rates already demonstrated.
Regarding waveforms, the company told MONCh that the radio will carry the Russian Army’s own proprietary waveforms, but that other waveforms can be ported into the transceiver including simplex and duplex voice communications, high speed data, video, navigational information and that the radio can support a network hosting up to 16,000 subscribers.
