At EW Europe in Stockholm, 14-16 May, Bird Aerosystems will offer its Self-Protection Radar Electro-Optic System (SPREOS) Directional Infra-Red Countermeasure (DIRCM), which it claims to be lightest and most compact and advanced DIRCM currently available.

SPREOS offers operators multiple functions, including threat confirmation and tracking as well as jamming advanced IR guided missiles. It combines a radar-based confirmation sensor and an active laser jammer, ensuring optimal protection against various threat types, including manportable air defence systems (MANPADS).

The system slews to the threat direction, activates its multi-band radar functionality, confirms and tracks while analysing information to enable the most effective jamming response. Following confirmation and tracking, SPREOS deploys the dual-band countermeasure laser, causing the missile to miss the aircraft. Compact and lightweight, SPREOS is an ideal solution for a range of airborne platforms and is integrated into the company’s AMPS MD solution, designed to automatically detect, verify, and foil surface to air missile (SAM) attacks.

Combining multiple independent laser generators, including the latest QCL technology, and utilising a proprietary multi-band laser jamming, Bird's SPREOS eliminates all of the false alarms and ensures that only actual threats are jammed. Uniquely designed to protect military and civilian aircraft against the growing threat of ground to air missiles (MANPADS), Bird's SPREOS can be easily integrated with all types of missile warning systems (MWS), and is the most compact and cost-effective DIRCM available today,” comments Co-CEO, Ronen Factor.

Alongside the SPREOS, the company will also present its patented Missile Approach Confirmation Sensor (MACS) at EW Europe 2019. The sensor confirms suspected incoming missile threats detected by the main electro-optical passive sensors, and practically eliminates false alarms. Concurrently, MACS also collects relevant information on the target (velocity and distance) and calculates its time-to-impact, enabling effective countermeasure response, ensuring that only real missiles will be declared by the system and reacted to.
