In discussions with Chilean Defence Minister Juan Antonio Gomez during a visit to Santiago, Chile, the UK’s Minister for the Armed Forces, Mike Penning, underlined the longstanding relationship between the two countries and its continuing importance.
“We share a close and longstanding defence relationship with Chile, and will continue our strong commitment to this important regional ally. There are historic ties between our two navies and we appreciate the support Chile has provided. We will continue to explore new ways for British and Chilean Armed Forces to work together, and alongside NATO,” he stated.
The relationship between the Chilean and Royal Navies is a long and close one: Lord Cochrane helped develop the Chilean Navy 200 years ago and 2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the Elephant Island rescue, when Chilean Captain Luis Pardo rescued Ernest Shackleton’s beleagured Antarctic exploration team.
