Safran Electronics and Defense Brazil and IMBEL are to partner more closely in aligning their capabilities to meet the emerging requirements of the Brazilian Army, the companies announced during LAAD 2019 in Rio de Janeiro last week.
The army’s strategic plan include the incorporation of state-of-the-art stsrems and technologies that Will allow the service to modernise and accommodate the demands of the modern battlefield. This demands access to new capabilities, which Will have the beneficial consequences of strengthening Brazil’s defence industry, thus increasing the sector’s contribution to national development.
IMBEL, in close partnership with Safran, has been working for some time to meet these demands, recognising that the importance of obtaining information for command, intelligence and battlefield management – all of which require advanced situational awareness and rapid threat response – requires modern, efficient and high-tech data communications, management and acquisition systems. Cooperation between the two companies thus speaks directly to the needs of the Brazilian Army. Their equipment solutions are already interoperable, modular and integrated and are supported by the production and maintenance facilities the two organisations have established in-country.
Early fruits of the partnership include integration of the JIM-LR multifunctional long-range infrared binoculars with the CTV-1400 Video Tactical Compressor, allowing real-time video transmission over the TPP-1400 portable radio. Supporting the advanced observer function, JIM-LR integrated with IMBEL radios via Bluetooth facilitates automated data transmission within the GENESIS artillery system. The Brazilian Army used this solution for the first time during the Sentinela Alerta exercise last October, combining IMBEL’s GENESIS solution with Safran’s SIGMA30 inertial system.
Launched to meet the strong demand for interoperability between various army communications systems, the IMBEL-developed Modular Interoperability Centre (CIM), enabling radios from different manufacturers to communicate, also allows interoperability between different digital and analogue legacy systems.
Safran's state-of-the-art navigational systems have also been integrated into IMBEL equipment for applications in armoured vehicles such as GUARANI and CASCAVEL as well as for integration into future towed and self-propelled artillery modernization programmes.
