On 20 December, Photonis announced that armasuisse, the Swiss defence procurement authority, has selected the company’s 4G image intensifier (II) tubes to modernize the night vision equipment of the Swiss armed forces.
As reported by MON on 20 December, Safran Vectronix is to supply some 8,000 NYX binocular night vision goggles (NVG) to armasuisse. The NYX features an 18mm high-performance 4G II tube, which provides greater ability to locate and engage threats, operating in all night and low-light conditions. The 4G standard is the latest technology in intensified night vision and is specifically designed to address the stringent requirements of special forces operators. Only 4G is able to offer ultra-fast auto-gating, the smallest halo and unrivalled spectral range from ultraviolet to near infrared. 4G provides an edge over adversaries in the darkest nights, in all types of terrain and all genres of operations, enabling operators to gain from the best possible DRI [detection, recognition and identification] range possible. “Photonis is proud to deliver its unrivalled technology to the Swiss Army and help safeguard their night operations,” said Frederic Guilhem, Executive Commercial Officer Night Vision at the company.
Photonis is the sole manufacturer in the EU capable of producing such state-of-the-art products in very large volumes. “Photonis has been very successful lately, thanks to the trust of our customers and the Swiss Army programme is one of the largest we have recently been awarded," Guilhem added. More large projects are expected for 2020: in order to be able to deal with multiple large orders simultaneously, Photonis is anticipating an increase in production capacity in its plants in both France and the Netherlands. The armasuisse order helps it strengthen its market position as a leading supplier of high-performance II tubes in Europe.
This night vision modernization programme is part of the Swiss ‘Armeebotschaft 2019’ and is one of the larger current night vision projects in Europe.
