Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) is actively seeking to expand its presence and business throughout the Latin American region through its capabilities in the fields of public security, defence, cyber and space.

We look at the Latin American market as one of the most dominant for IAI. The company operates local offices in Brazil, Chile and Colombia and has recently opened a new office in Mexico,” the company’s Executive Vice President Marketing, Eli Alfassi, told MONCh at LAAD 2019 in Rio de Janeiro.

In terms of radars, IAI has won some very important contracts in the region. One of them, through its ELTA Systems subsidiary, was a contract in Mexico to supply ELM-2226 Advanced Coastal Surveillance Radars (ACSR), of which there are already over 120 in operation worldwide. In the specific case of Mexico, the purpose is to protect offshore rigs and energy platforms. The programme consists of supplying several radars and linking them to a central command and control (C2) facility which manages them remotely with a minimal crew requirement. The radar has a detection range of 20 nm for rubber boats, 60 nm for patrol craft and up to the radar horizon for large ships.

In Brazil, IAI is offering a wide spectrum of solutions, some of them in partnership with two local strategic defence companies, IACIT and Avionics Services. With the former, IAI is working on an over-the-horizon (OTH) radar project, an innovative surface-wave HF radar design which employs phased array technology and interference cancellation techniques, providing reliable, persistent coverage of the broader maritime area at all times. “We view this project as an important milestone towards persistent, affordable, reliable and efficient coverage of a broad Brazilian maritime area,” explained Alfassi.
