The Swedish Defence Materiel Agency (FMV) received the 100th CV90 combat vehicle to be refurbished and upgraded in late August, the agency announced in a 27 August statement.

FMV negotiated a contract to rebuild 288 vehicles in six different variants in 2016 with H-B Utveckling, a company jointly owned by BAE Systems Bofors and BAE Systems Hägglunds: the former company is responsible for turrets and systems integration, while Hägglunds manages the chassis. Final integration and delivery takes place at Bofors, except for the recovery variant, which is delivered by Hägglunds. The upgrade includes the integration of a new combat support system.

Series production, which began last year, will continue into 2022. Instructor and maintenance technician training courses have been completed and in August the armed forces were able to begin unit training.

It is gratifying that we have achieved one of the most important goals in the project, that the armed forces can now carry out their training of conscripts and units with the rebuilt vehicles, a significant step in the army's planned growth and capability increase,” commented Lena Jansson, project manager at FMV.

It is a challenge to integrate a modern management support system into a vehicle system that was delivered almost 30 years ago. The success factor is a result of the close and intimate collaboration between the companies, FMV and the Swedish Armed Forces,” added Tomas Karlson, project manager at H-B Utveckling. “It is gratifying to now be in a series delivery phase with stable quality of our deliveries.”

Although a 30+ year old platform, upgrades, renovation and refurbishment keep the CV90 family relevant to modern operations, as witnessed by the Dutch Army example on exercise. (Photo: Koninklijke Landmacht)
