Pocasset, Massachusetts-based Hydroid, a Kongsberg company, is at this year’s Surface Navy Association National Symposium reporting it is the primary technology in the US Navy’s expeditionary mine countermeasure units that are currently operating worldwide. Eric Wirstrom, Senior Manager for US Government Business at the company, noted Hydroid REMUS unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV) are known for their unprecedented, field-proven reliability and availability in the field. “At Hydroid, we are continually looking to improve speed, endurance and integrate the latest state-of-the-art technology into our vehicles. Our primary focus is always on our customers and providing them with the technology and capability to successfully achieve their missions,” he said.

With respect to its products, Hydroid offers UUVs in multiple sizes as required to meet its customer needs (REMUS series of autonomous underwater vehicles [AUVs], for instance). Beyond vehicles, Hydroid is responding to community requirements for smaller and faster vehicles. The community expert continued: “We are currently working to increase sprint speeds to allow our UUVs to operate in diverse environmental conditions across the globe. It is continual evolution so, yes, size reduction and speed increases are expected over the coming years.”

The company’s business model should resonate with non-US customers as Hydroid offers non-ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations)-controlled solutions. Mr Wirstrom concluded: “Additionally, Hydroid has over 18 years of continuous product development and superior engineering design experience. Our AUVs are the leading trusted solution.”
