At I/ITSEC 2018 in Orlando today, Rockwell Collins is launching the GRIFFIN-2 visiaul system for immersive military fast jet flying training. Centred on an open architecture and designed with customisation in mind, GRIFFIN-2 brings low acquisition and life-cycle costs back to the forefront of planners’ minds.

Featuring a non-faceted, completely smooth-surfaced visual dome, the GRIFFIN-2 is built on an open architecture that allows the use of multiple projector types. This means that ultra-high definition (UHD) commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) technology can now be exploited for optimal fidelity, resolution, and a lower acquisition and life-cycle cost compared with other systems. In addition, the modular design of the GRIFFIN-2 makes it adaptable for any fast-jet aircraft type, including new and emerging aircraft platforms.

The GRIFFIN-2 provides a dramatic leap forward in pilot training value through significantly improved scene realism, allowing for better recognition of targets and detail, which ultimately leads to more effective training,” commented Rockwell Collins’ Vice President and General Manager, Simulation and Training Solutions, Nick Gibbs. “With decades of success in the fast-jet training market, Rockwell Collins is continuing to lead the way with the GRIFFIN-2, which will provide fourth and fifth-generation fighter pilots the most realistic and immersive training experience available.”

Rockwell Collins’ GRIFFIN systems represent a significant portion of the worldwide fast-jet training installed base and are currently used in F-35 LIGHTNING II, F-16, Eurofighter TYPHOON and the Aermacchi M-346 training programmes.
