Surma, a Finnish specialist in electromagnetic signature management, has been selected by ASMAR as the provider of the electromagnetic compatibility/electromagnetic interference (EMC/EMI) design and management for Chile’s ANTARTICA 1 icebreaker project.

In the current paradigm of wireless sensors and wireless information retrieval and communication systems, the right approach to on-board signal propagation within a vessel is a crucial question to maximise the valuable time of researchers and the overall efficiency of the icebreaker. We are proud to be part of the team behind ANTARTICA 1, which will be one of the most sophisticated oceanographic ships ever built,” comments Surma CEO, Kristian Tornivaara.

Surma will assist ASMAR throughout the multiyear project, managing the EMC Working Group. Martti Helamaa, Surma’s Engineering Director and the project’s EMC Manager, commented that the company is very excited to start this journey with ASMAR which, without a doubt, will be an important asset for the future of oceanographic and climate research in the Antarctic region.

Surma, founded in 2007, serves several shipyards and navies internationally. The company has developed advanced Combat Survivability Software, that enables time and resources in analysis and design work to be saved, as well as vessel safety and mission performance to be increased. Surma provides consultancy and education as well as degaussing systems.

In October 2018, Surma joined forces with DA-Group a growing Finnish defence technology corporation that provides underwater technology solutions.
