British company H-Scientific Ltd. (HSL) has released ShipSim 3 and AUVSim, simulation software packages for surface and sub-surface vessels respectively. The packages provide autopilot and unmanned vessel designers with the ability to simulate vessel dynamics prior to expensive sea trials.

Features of ShipSim 3 include real time high accuracy modelling for a wide range of vessels in configurable environmental conditions, a customisable user interface and support for AIS, RADAR and NMEA 2000. AUVSim provides realistic six degree-of-freedom simulation, flexible user configuration and environmental models including a wave response model.

HSL’s founder, Dr Henry Robinson, stated: “With an increase in the number of autonomous vessels being designed, …. the increased cost of sea trials and the resultant delays in the time to market, we offer a cost effective aid to the design process. It is a proven way to optimise the design.”
