Safran Electronics and Defense has been contracted by Lockheed Martin to provide initial design work on three combat systems for Australia’s new Attack-class Future Submarines.

Safran was awarded a A$36.77 million contract on 8th October at the Pacific 2019 exhibition in Sydney to provide preliminary and detailed designs for the submarines’ search and attack mast, navigation radar and navigation data distribution components.

The company will provide its Series 30 Attack and Search optronic masts. The Attack model incorporates a Laser Range Finder, a SWIR channel, day/night TV camera and IR beeper for communication with special operation forces. The Search mast can conduct a full horizon scan in seconds, use laser systems and electronic support measures.

The Seanapster Data Distribution and Processing Center will manage the data from the sensors and prioritise it for operators on the submarine.

Under the contract, work will continue out to 2023 under which Safran will deliver prototypes and interface simulators that will allow Lockheed Martin as the combat systems integrator, to conduct tests and validate performance. This will take place at Lockheed’s Combat System Architecture Laboratory in Adelaide.

Lockheed Martin Australia stated: “While the contract represents the initial phase of development activities (including the development of design up to and including the component-level critical design reviews), it will also see Safran establish sovereign capabilities at its new facility in Botany, NSW, for the build, integration and ongoing sustainment of these components.”

As part of its delivery of this work, Safran will subcontract two Australian companies, Acacia Systems and Thomas Global Systems, for the design and development of software and hardware, respectively.
