When experienced submarine builder thyssenkrupp Marine System – whose boats have been supplied to 20 global navies – had a requirement for ensuring the safe transport of submarines between its shipbuilding and service facilities, it turned to Norway’s Syncrolift for an appropriate solution.
After an exhaustive evaluation, thyssenkrupp selected the Syncrolift fluid bed system for its most recent construction projects. By acquiring the Syncrolift transport solution, in combination with adjusted docking pallets, several benefits were realised. In addition to the safe transfer solution for handling submarines, thyssenkrupp would also be able to use both its existing Syncrolift system and the existing rails.
The ‘fluid bed‘ referred to here is a term for a set of hydraulic cylinders integrated into the transport trolleys, ensuring sensitive and perfect load distribution of the submarine during transfer. Several customised trolleys have been designed in order to accommodate the specific submarine type in question. Syncrolift has more than 30 years‘ experience in this kind of trolley and is in continuous development to ensure integration of trolley and transfer systems is seamless, according to the company’s General Manager, Rolf-Atle Tomassen. “This kind of solution is a win-win to all of us, the customer, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and Syncrolift. As we see it, it is a good example of how professional discussions and tailored solutions can lead to excellent results for all parties,“ he observed.
A contract between thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and Syncrolift has been agreed and the design process will be completed shortly. Final deliveries are planned for 2021. By then, the customised ‘fluid bed‘ will have been manufactured, installed and tested.
