On the opening day of Aero India 2017, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) announced the completion of a programme to develop and deliver a comprehensive security and protection system for the Port of Mumbai.

Developed by subsidiary company Elta Systems, the Integrated Underwater Harbour Defence and Surveillance System (IUHDSS) comprises surveillance, observation, surface and underwater sensing arrays that can detect, locate and track a wide variety of threats – from small boats and submersibles to swimmer delivery vehicles or, indeed, the swimmers themselves.

Modular and infinitely customisable to meet operational requirements, IUHDSS includes an advanced C2 system, coastal surveillance radars, diver-detection sonars, EO sensors and automated threat identification systems. A common situational picture for total port defence is created by the central C2 facility.

The Indian Navy, faced with the requirement to defend a coastline of over 7,500km, generated the requirement to which IUHDSS is the response.

We are proud to deliver another project to India, our strategic partner. Many of IAI’s systems play a role in India’s maritime and coastal defence. Since becoming operational, this system has proved itself, and we look forward to continuing our long-term strategic cooperation with India for a bright and safe future,” Nissim Hadas, Elta Systems’ President, commented. The company also stated that similar systems have already begun securing other Indian ports over the last two years.
