The Bundeswehr has ordered container-based GUARDION counter-UAS (C-UAS) systems from a team led by ESG Elektroniksystem- und Logistik-GmbH as part of a contract to protect field camp and forward operating bases from the threat of small UAS.

The main components of the system are Hensoldt’s high-performance XPELLER system (SPEXER 2000D radar and NIGHT OWL M camera), Rohde & Schwarz’s ARDONIS radio direction finders and effectors from HP Wüst. As the main contractor, ESG is responsible for the overall system and, with integration partner M Schall, will integrate the individual high-technology components. In addition, ESG is responsible for the processing of all sensor data by using its proprietary core intelligence, and for the display of the intuitive situation picture via ESG’s military TARANIS command and control system.

The modular, scalable drone detection and defence solution is based on – and takes particular account of – the many years of operational experience that ESG and its cooperation partners Rohde & Schwarz and Diehl Defence have with GUARDION. The system has been used, for example, to secure various major political events, including the G20 summit in Hamburg in 2017, President Obama’s state visit to Germany in June 2016 and the G7 summit in Elmau in 2015, as well as during German Unity Day celebrations and the international aerospace exhibition ILA Berlin in 2018.
